Call for papers
2nd and 3rd March 2012, The Arches, Glasgow

A festival of sound and performance and associated research, run by postgraduate students from Glasgow University in partnership with The Arches, welcomes papers from researchers of any discipline.

Sound Thought 2012 considers the idea of music as gift: What value has this?  What is offered and what is returned?  What is at stake in the exchange?  Does giving diminish the giver?  Do gifts require justification or is it the thought that counts?

We invite papers on this theme, but also on any aspects of sound more generally.  We welcome papers of 20 minutes, but will consider papers of any length.

This is an opportunity to contribute to collaborative learning in a public arts venue, and we especially welcome proposals from researchers who wish to engage more broadly with the festival.  This may include incorporating performance into papers, participation in panel discussions, providing literature, recordings etc.

Submissions

250-word abstracts papers should be sent to [email protected].  The deadline for proposals is 18th January 2012.

Sound Thought:

  • exists to create a critical context for sound and research in sound;
  • prioritises reflexive learning, new work, hybrid forms;
  • provides space for knowledge exchange, composition, experimentation, improvisation, and play.

Sound Thought 2011 included diverse and ground-breaking work from celebrated composers, visual artists, scientists, dancers, contemporary theatre practitioners and film makers alongside a large programme of intriguing multimedia presentations, discussions and workshops focused on music and sound in performance.  More information can be found here.  More information on The Arches can be found at www.thearches.co.uk.
