Scattered Musics : ethnic, racial, gender and regional reconfigurations through music performances

We are interested in papers that are engaged with and sensitive to the nuances of struggles over identities and representations through musical expression.  In particular we seek manuscripts that give account of  some of the ways in which musicians, fans, promoters, and others use music and other media (including social media), to negotiate, transcend, or create solidarities with  different normativities and nationalisms. The following questions guide us:

How have diasporas transformed the musical expressions of their home countries  as well as those in the host communities?  How do musical performances provide a space for play in seeking to understand diasporic identity not as a fixed entity, but as an ever-changing relation to the world around one?  How do some communities recreate home away from home in musical performances, and how do some use music to critique and refine their senses of home?  What are some of the ways in which musical performance can help reconstruct and redefine collective memory and a collective sense of place?

We welcome manuscripts from scholars who themselves are part of a kind of critical diaspora, scholars who may be located within disciplines that are homes to them but who write from a perspective that moves between, across, or around disciplines.

If you are interested in participating in this collection, please send an abstract of 300 words, the title, your affiliation and contact information to Martha I. Chew Sanchez at [email protected] and David Henderson at [email protected] by February 10, 2016.  The full manuscript should be submitted by July 1, 2016.

The final manuscript should not be longer than 25 pages and should be typed double-spaced throughout (including text, extracts, notes, tables, and bibliography). Please print your manuscript in 12-point Times Roman or Times New Roman font. Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition. Standardization is necessary so that we can estimate page count accurately. We will be using Microsoft Word. If you have used another application, such as WordPerfect, please convert your final manuscript to Microsoft Word format.
