Rock Music Studies
Special Issue: Bob Marley

Edited by Mike Alleyne

Submissions are invited for a special edition of Rock Music Studies that examines the art and legacies of reggae’s best known figure in the particular context of the 40th anniversaries of his Rastaman Vibration and Exodus albumsThe latter was cited by Time magazine in 1999 as the Album of the Century.

Contributors are invited to consider the topic broadly, and possible themes might include addressing Marley in the following contexts:

  • Crossing over to the rock music market
  • Press coverage of live performances
  • Marley in interviews
  • Film/TV documentary treatment
  • International perception and reception
  • Political and social perspectives
  • Visual representations
  • Representations of Rastafarian philosophy and spirituality
  • Critiques of the albums in the digital age

In the first instance, potential contributors are asked to submit abstracts (approximately 250 words in English) and brief CVs by April 30, 2017.  We are particularly interested in studies that go beyond what have become “the usual suspects” and that apply distinctive analytical approaches and content.

Those selected for inclusion will then be invited to submit articles (6,000-8,000 words) by January 31, 2018.  Essays will be peer-reviewed.  Inquiries regarding potential essay topics and their suitability for inclusion are welcome.  Please include your professional/academic affiliations, a postal address, and preferred e-mail contact with your essay; for purposes of blind peer-review, please do not include your name within the body of the essay.

The issue of Rock Music Studies will be published in 2019.
