I’m delighted to announce the call for papers for the 2017 IASPM UK&I Postgraduate Students’ Conference on the theme ‘Negotiating Popular Music’. This two-day conference takes as its starting point the position that encounters with popular music involve a dialogue between varied forces and agencies. It offers an opportunity for research students to come together to interrogate these myriad interactions with popular music as analysts, makers, tastemakers, and so on.
The submissions committee welcomes proposals from current or recently-graduated postgraduate students on any aspect of popular music studies, with submissions encouraged that investigate the interactions and agencies involved in encounters with popular music. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
listener cultures, consumption technologies, and reception-based theories; making popular music; approaches to the analysis or interpretation of popular music.
The conference will be held at the University of Surrey, Guildford from 7-8 October 2017.
Proposals for 20-minute papers, 20-minute practice-led workshops, and panels of up to three papers are all welcomed. To submit a proposal, please send abstracts of no more than 250 words with a brief accompanying biography of around 50 words to [email protected] (for panel submissions, please also include a 150 word contextualising summary). All submissions should be received by Friday, 18 August.
With best wishes,
Alex Harden
UK&I Postgraduate Representative
