OK Computer, Radiohead’s third album, has captivated many rock music fans
worldwide and contributed to enhance the band’s prestigious status within
the British rock scene. Upon release in May 1997, the album reached the top
spot in the UK album charts, and remained ranked in the Top 40 for two
years, with sales in excess of three million units. The album was met with
critical acclaim from the New Musical Express, which awarded it a perfect
10/10 rating, and continues to this day to feature in the music press’s
lists of the best rock albums of all times.

Ninth International Doctoral Workshop in Ethnomusicology

The Center for World Music at the University of Hildesheim and Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media are pleased to announce the ninth annual workshop for PhD candidates in ethnomusicology. Through paper presentations, discussion and working groups, the workshop offers a unique environment for 16 doctoral students at the writing stage for their PhD dissertations to engage in international dialogue and exchange, and expand critical debate on recent research within the discipline. The workshop will be directed by Prof. Dr. Philip V. Bohlman (Chicago/Hanover), Dr. Michael Fuhr (Hildesheim), Cornelia Gruber (Hanover) and Prof. Dr. Raimund Vogels (Hildesheim/Hanover).

Metal Studies at the University of Victoria and ISMMS are pleased to announce the following Call for Papers:

Metal music is a crucible for identity and community. At its core it aims to press boundaries. These boundaries, in turn, serve both to reinforce belonging and to exclude nonparticipants. The goal of this conference is to explore different ways metal music fans experience and create communal bonds, and the relationship of these bonds with other types of communal bonds (ethnic, religious, and national for example). How can these multivalent bonds reinforce or destabilize each other? How do lyrical and symbolic themes and communal bonds aid or hinder the process of or reclaiming identity or regaining voice?  How do artists grapple with and recontextualize some of the problematic origins of the genre?

Global Reggae Conference: “Dancehall, Music and the City”

The Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Reggae Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus announce the fifth bi-ennial Global Reggae Conference  under the theme “Dancehall, Music and the City”. This conference is being staged at a time when we celebrate Bob Marley’s birth and the very foundation, the space – dancehall – through which the world has consumed seven distinct musical genres in mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, nyabinghi, dub and dancehall. This conference also comes at a time when Kingston celebrates its designation as a creative city for music by UNESCO in December 2015.  
The conference intends to open discussions about contemporary considerations for Jamaican music spaces, genres, cross-fertilization, production and economy using Kingston as a backdrop for discussing the foundational space of the dancehall as a main theme.
