More about Alexander

I am a popular musicology graduate student in the Department of Music and Media at the University of Surrey. Before commencing my doctoral studies, I  specialised in studio-based creative practice and received an MA (Distinction) in electroacoustic composition and sonic art from the University of Birmingham. As a composer, my work has featured in projects at the London Southbank Centre (2012) and the Festival de Cannes (2014).

My current musicological research concerns the hermeneutics of studio-based popular music in the 21st century. I am particularly engaged in exploring the dramatic role of the aural environment in recorded music and its interactive relationship with narrative. Although my research relates primarily to recent pop and rock music, I also maintain an interest in the electronic popular music of the 1970s.

I have presented conference papers on a variety of topics which include the changing musical uses of technology and its relationship with persona; political and social issues surrounding 1970s German rock practices, and; authenticity.

Research interests include:

  • Narratology, with particular reference to sonic design;
  • Phonographic constructions of reality and realism;
  • Personae and related mimetic issues;
  • Authenticity and expression
